Metro Elevator leases and sells personnel hoists for both temporary and permanent applications. We maintain a large personnel hoist rental fleet which includes all types of personnel hoisting equipment ready for prompt delivery and installation anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. Metro has also performed permanent installations across the globe. Our corporate headquarters are located in Indianapolis, Indiana and we also employ personnel located in Denver, CO and Pittsburgh, PA.
About Our Personnel Hoists
Our Personnel Hoists may also be referred to as Material Hoists, Construction Hoists, Construction Elevators, Buck Hoists, Man-lifts, Material Lifts, and Rack & Pinion Hoists but they all serve the same purpose: transporting personnel and materials up and down vertically in a safe and speedy manner.
We can supply personnel hoists for three different applications:
- Personnel and Material – designed to carry up to 8,000 lbs. and large construction material or a maximum of 40 workers
- Special Purpose – typically designed for a maximum capacity of three to six workers with their tools and equipment
- Material-Only – capacities to lift and lower up to 6,000 lbs. of materials or equipment, however, material-only lifts are not designed to safely transport workers
Our Personnel Hoists can be leased, erected, and dismantled by our personnel for:
- Renovation or Construction for low-rise or high-rise buildings
- Ground Mining Applications
- Scheduled Outages and Maintenance Projects for Power Plants and Oil Refineries
Many other industries use Rack and Pinion personnel hoists for permanent operations where their main purpose is to move workers, equipment, and materials from ground to upper landings or landing to landing.
All our personnel hoists which we lease use a motor, gear, and brake box with a rack-and-pinion system that travels the tower at various speeds. The travel speed will vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the hoist. For very tallest buildings, we recommend hoists that can travel as fast as 305 feet per minute.
Many of our personnel hoist rentals are equipped with VFDs (i.e. variable frequency drives). VFD hoists provide a much smoother ride and greatly reduce the chance for mechanical breakdown due to wear and tear on working parts. VFD’s also eliminate the need to “jog” hoist up and down because of their precise leveling accuracy.
The personnel hoists we typically rent can have either single or twin cages which move from landing to landing along a mast tower. The mast sections are attached to the building or structure every 25 to 30 feet via a tie-in (either standard or specially fabricated). The cars for twin hoists can operate independently while using the same tower. This greatly reduces the worker’s wait time for the hoists which thereby improves their work productivity.
Our personnel hoists require a trained hoist operator in most situations unless the hoist is installed with automatic controls. When you hire Metro operators they contact Metro directly if maintenance issues should arise. Our operators are trained to get the elevator up and running as quickly as possible when certain issues arise without the need to call in a service technician.
